Have no doubt that any internet marketer would love to create something that became viral and raged across the net.
Having that happen would obviously be a tremendous boost to your business, plus it would give you tons of confidence. Of course, getting your work to go viral is not easy. Trying to predict the trends and ‘hot’ topics and ideas of the internet is something that not even the most gifted psychic can do. Things change so fast online, that the best word for describing what people will turn their attention to is, luck. Of course there are things you can do to raise your chances of going viral online.
Here are some things you can do.
Make your work visible. Your created work is not enough. People must know of its existence. Submitting to social bookmarking sites is one of the best ways to do this. Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon are great (and free) services that you can submit your work to. When they are looking for the next big ‘it’ topic, internet users frequent these sites. In order to go from unknown to extremely popular only requires a few of these people to click on your links. Make sure that you are easy to find. Your work won’t ever go viral if people have to look for you.
Don’t let a lot of time lapse between your first round of viral content and your next release. Avoid stalling on things by telling people ‘new sales prices coming soon,’ or anything like that. So never bore your readers, you’ll have to create more on a more frequent basis. We all know what happens when you make people wait too long or they forget about us. Work on getting something into place, maybe a newsletter, and only then you can take a slight, short break. Until then, however, count on needing to create something pretty much every day!
One of the cheaper tricks to getting your work to go viral is to pretend to be an idiot about something.
Or, you can come clean and really tell them you’re clueless. Be different – admit you’re not knowledgeable about it and ask for people to help you. People will be more likely to at least comment, and offer help, if you’re just clear and open about being clueless. You could also just pretend to be an idiot and toss an ignorant opinion or two into your work. Desperate internet marketers do this all the time. But be aware of what you’re doing – you’ll have to live with whatever it is.
Don’t forget that viral marketing shouldn’t be considered as an exact science. Making sure that you get as many eyes on your work as possible is the only thing that you can really do.
Doing your best to create quality content and products is only half the game. People must know of your existence and what you are offering in order for you to win this game. If you use these few hints and tips, your chances will be greatly improved.
